Seminar for modern fragrance formulation and marketing

IFRA is holding a conference in Brussels, Belgium that will take an in-depth look at current formulation approaches and how to market fragrances.

The one day conference will be held on Thursday 31 March at the Stanhope Hotel and will include presentations from five keynote speakers, rounded off by a panel debate.

After an introduction by IFRA directory general Jean-Pierre Houri, the first presentation will be given by Professor Tim Jacob from The Cardiff University school of bioscience.

Psychophysiological responses to fragrance

Jacob will discuss his study of the psychophysiological responses to fragrances and how the human sense of smell adapts to new fragrances, determined through psychometric testing, EEG and physiological monitoring.

Next on the agenda is Steven Van Toller, from the University of Warwick, UK, who will discuss what impact an inability to detect odours - a condition known as anosmia - can have on individuals and the sensory deprivation this causes.

Olivia Bordalo, of the Centro Dermatologia, based in Lisbon Portugal, will be giving a presentation about the allergenic effects of fragrance materials, disclosing the latest scientific research about this complicated area.

Explaining consumer fragrance choice

Fragrance and the Marketing Mix will be the title of the presentation given by perfumer Allan McRitchie, who will be giving a detailed look at the psychology of fragrance and the impact this has on consumers’ fragrance purchasing patterns.

The final presentation will be given by Christopher Laudamiel, another leading perfumer, who will discuss the mysteries behind creating the perfect fragrance and the part that fragrances play in our lives.

The conference will be finished by a panel debate centering on the Pros and Cons of Fragrance Use, before the morning-only programme finishes at 1.30pm, rounded off by a buffet lunch.
