Leveson and CTPA commend step forward in science media reporting

As the Leveson report is published in the UK, the man at the centre of it, Lord Justice Leveson, has commended proposed best practice guidelines for science and health reporting which were put forward by the Science Media Centre.

In his report which was published last week, Lord Leveson remarked on the guidelines as being: “in my view commendable for their utility as well as their succinctness. Any new regulator should bear them closely in mind.”

Dr Chris Flower, director-general of the trade association, CTPA, commented: “Science Media Centre’s guidelines could mark a really positive step forward for reportage about the safety of cosmetics products.”

“The guidelines propose that media should take a robust, evidence-based approach to reporting and be mindful of making extrapolations or drawing links if there is no scientific evidence to support these.”
