Fair Hair Care stamp targets ethical hair extensions

Hair extensions have often been in the spotlight over allegations of poor business practices, which is why the Fair Hair Care organisation is stepping in with the aim of setting higher standards.

The UK-based body has been set up to set ethical standards for businesses in the category as well as establishing a means for consumers worldwide to identify hair extensions that are ethically produced.

The people behind the stamp are backing up its launch with a campaign to raise more than 500,000 signatures from consumers worldwide, demanding that manufacturers and stockists desist from selling low quality extensions at high prices.

Campaign starts with standards

Fair Hair Care says it is getting things started by setting industry standards for manufacturers and hair care companies selling extensions, using methodology and verification processes that have been established using scientists and hair extension experts.

The mark will be used on products to ensure that extensions have met the criteria, while also ensuring that consumers can have access to information that identifies exactly how these standards were met by visiting the organisation’s website.

Media attention has exposed the unethical practices that some players in the hair extension market are guilty of, in turn raising consumer awareness and leading to a demand for higher standards.

However, there is little to no information available to consumers to identify hair extensions that meet the best practices, which is where Fair Hair Care is stepping in with a stamp that will identify a brand’s efforts to reach goals for sustainability, higher ethical practices and transparency.

Answering consumer demand

“A growing band of consumers want good quality hair extensions, but prefer to buy from brands that are striving to have a positive impact on people and the planet. Transparency at the point of sale promotes informed choices,” Christina Adesina, co-founder of Fair Hair Care said.

“Each brand awarded the Fair Hair Care mark must meet stringent requirements such as demonstrating how they include transparency and longevity in hair extensions in their business model. All brands featured take great care over ethical sourcing, manufacturing and marketing.”

Ultimately the website is aiming to promote a community of brands that will lead the way for the category, setting the right example for other players to follow.
