Producer of oil-seed based ingredients Botaneco has launched a natural emulsion base Hydresia G2 which allows formulators to develop products over a broader pH range than its original product.

Canada-based bio-tech company SemBiosys created Botaneco at the end of last year to target the personal care industry with its multi-functional emulsions.

At In-Cosmetics in Amsterdam last week the company reached out to a wider audience with the updated version of its first generation oleosome product.

Wider pH range broadens market opportunities

The newly launched ingredient, Hydresia G2, may be added to products in the pH range 3.5 - 8.5 making it available for use in low pH exfoliants and anti-aging products.

Botaneco is hoping to capture a larger slice of the personal care market with the latest addition to its oil-seed range.

"We are excited about the opportunity to expand our product offerings in North America, as well as expanding into European and Asian markets," said Botaneco CEO Andrew Baum.

Extracted from safflower seeds, its oil-in-water emulsions naturally contain moisturizing oils along with emulsifying proteins and phospholipids.

Botaneco claims that what is extracted is almost the finished product, which makes it natural, but also means that manufacturers can develop new products by cold-processing.

Formulation and processing time are reduced significantly with cold-processing, added Botaneco.

Providing revenue for parent company

SemiBiosys expects that Botaneco will provide it with a strong and dependable revenue stream, allowing the parent company to continue its pharmaceutical research, which is not profitable in the short-term.

Sembiosys will be banking on the success of Boteneco in order to secure the financial health of the company.

Although the biotech firm posted improved revenues of just over CAD $1m ($950,000) for the first half of 2007, it made a net loss of almost CAD $6.5m ($6.2m).
