Mibelle Biochemistry expert unveils ‘eco-breakthrough’ technology at Rio+20
Mibelle Biochemistry's Dr. Fred Zülli presented what the company calls an 'eco-breakthrough' in the development of active ingredients with its PhytoCellTec Concept technology at Rio+20 on Tuesday.

Taking part in a podium discussion with companies known for their engagement in sustainable development, Zülli illustrated how the technology delivers sustainability by preserving endangered plants by using very little material to establish the plant stem cells culture.

The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development brings industry professionals together to look ahead and further develop the importance of sustainable development in various industries.

Beneficial

According to the Switzerland-based company, the properties of most cosmetic products are defined by active ingredients and the fast moving market is driving the demand of innovative and sustainable ingredients.

Moreover it points out that plant cultivations require considerable natural resources, which can be time consuming to arrange and do not comply with today’s sustainability requirements.

In regards to efficiency, Mibelle Biochemistry says this technology potentially overcomes this problem as it contains active molecules that protect and preserve skin stem cells.

Actives already based on the technology

In 2008, the company launched PhytoCellTec Malus Domestica, claimed to be the first cosmetic active ingredient based on plant stem cells derived from a rare Swiss apple breed known for its longevity.

"Only the cultivation of stem cells made the use of this almost extinct apple possible for cosmetics. Clinically proven anti-aging results of the apple stem cells as well its eco-friendly production resulted in immediate interest from the global cosmetic industry. Often described as ‘the miracle anti-ageing Apple."

The company further points to how it obtains plant stem cells from the Argan tree, in an area in Morocco that has a drastically reduced tree population to show how beneficial the development is.

For the development of our product PhytoCellTec Argan just one fruit has been needed to establish the plant stem cell culture.”

Featuring the same technology Mibelle has developed further products from other special plant species. This includes PhytoCellTe Alp Rose which is based on stem cells from Swiss alpine roses that protect the skin against barrier disruption and therefore maintain skin moisture.
