Bioactive peptide to treat ageing from within
Following a study by scientists at the University of Kiel on the effect of bioactive collagen peptides (BCP), Gelita AG has developed an active for BFW products, that it says will reduce wrinkles from the inside out.

Recent research has determined a combination of peptides to be highly effective in treating dry skin conditions such as eczema.

Scientists have determined the material to be of sound scientific foundation for nutricosmetics, and are popular with the growing number of consumers looking to follow a more holistic approach to skin care.

This particular active 'Verisol' is effective on dermal synthesis and wrinkle reduction, according to the Germany based company.

Dr. Stephan Hausmanns, Gelita's vice president of the health & nutrition business unit says it has a direct impact on the extracellular matrix turnover.

This is clearly demonstrated by a significant increase in collagen and elastin synthesis, with the result of statistically significant wrinkle reduction after only 4, and even more pronounced after 8 weeks of treatment. In simple words: The participants looked considerably younger after the treatment," he explains of the process.

Power of the peptide

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 114 women aged 45-65 years were randomized with taking 2.5 g of Verisol or placebo once daily for 8 weeks, with 57 subjects included in each group.

Skin wrinkles were objectively measured in all subjects, before starting the treatment, after 4 and 8 weeks as well as 4 weeks after the last intake (4-week regression phase).

A subgroup was established for suction blister biopsies analyzing pro-collagen I, elastin and fibrillin at the beginning of the treatment and after 8 weeks of intake.

"After 4 weeks of treatment the BCP group showed a statistically significantly reduced eye wrinkle volume of more than 7.2% on average. This positive effect was more pronounced after 8 weeks of intake (20.1%)," University of Kiel scientists stated.

Adding that a maximum reduction in eye wrinkle volume of 49.9% was achieved.

Four weeks after the last product intake (4-week regression phase), the BCP treatment group still showed a statistically significant decrease in eye wrinkle volume of 11.5%. The study was conducted by the Department of Dermatology, University of Kiel, December 24, 2013 (publication: http://www.karger.ch/Article/Abstract/355523).
