States of matter – solid, liquid, and gas – they make up the world around us, we learnt about them at school, and now thanks to Seppic it is the inspiration behind the latest cosmetics formulas showcased at the in-cosmetics event in Barcelona.

CosmeticsDesign-Europe.com popped by the stand at the show to get a feel for these different formulations and see them up close, and Seppic’s Market Manager, Beauty Care, Nathalie Chevrot explained how sensory properties and textures are a big part of make-up at the moment.

“We see that a lot of customers and consumers are asking for a lot of different textures to enhance the feel and make a product stand out, and for this we need to develop different formulations,” she told us.

“That is why we have come up with our ‘States of Matter’ concept. It is about texture transformation.”

Solid

The new concept offers an innovative list of formulas from solid and liquid to gas.

In the solid state, the French firm offers Insta-Smooth Dazzling Blur, which is topically applied and is aimed at eliminating skin imperfections.

This is formed of the Sesaflash toner and Timecode wrinkle corrector to deliver instant radiance while Cevrot explains that the polymer Sepimax Zen gives the formula texture.

We also saw first-hand how the Shift Shaper Scrub sculpting clay product, which is made up of Montanov L and Simulsol 165 emulsifiers to give it a firm texture and Aquaxyl to moisturise, dissolves into a gentle scrub once it makes contact with water.

Liquid and gas

The mention of water brings us nicely to the liquid state of the concept, and here the French firm offers a Transforming BB Cream, based again on its Sepimax Zen, which releases colour pigments on application, changing colour on the skin.

And to end the demonstration, Chevrot displayed the gas state of the States of Matter Concept which comes in the form of Pop Rocks Energizing Mousse.

This product is like a chemical reaction as it tingles on the skin as sodium bicarbonate and citric acid meet, and is certainly reminiscent of the childhood confectionery of a similar name.

Again it utilises Sepimax Zen, and Chevrot says that it boosts skin with oxygen and is enriched with an energizing mineral blend of Gulf Stream Sea Water and Sepitonic M3.

“This new concept is a real chemistry for the sense,” adds Chevrot. “ When you are young you like playing and mixing things together and are taught about chemistry in school. This is like chemistry for adults!”
