France-based Alban Muller has launched 29 new active ingredients for the global naturals market with "super fruits" at the heart of the offerings.

The ingredients join the Phytami range and are made up of fruit and flower extracts including fig, sour cherry, mango, juniper and milk thistle.

Each product has its own balance of cosmetic benefits including high levels of Vitamin C or polyphenol.

The antioxidant rich "super fruits" in the range are well known for their health benefits in food and are now making a big impact in anti-ageing skin care products.

Food and cosmetics come together

In an overview of the major trends for 2008, market researchers Mintel picked out the use of food ingredients such as "super fruits" in cosmetics as a growing phenomenon.

Consumers associate fruits with good health and are therefore more inclined to embrace them in a cosmetic product than unfamiliar alternatives.

A spokesperson told CosmeticsDesign.com that the firm's know-how in food and cosmetics was complementary and particularly well suited to the current market conditions.

In 30 years the company has developed significant expertise in the development of natural ingredients and now sees the market moving towards them, added the spokesperson.

Over the years the company has therefore been able to gradually extend its range of products.

Production process behind the extracts

All the actives in the newly enlarged Phytami range are extracted from natural solvents made up of water and/or ethanol of plant origin.

The concentrate is then dried at low temperature to preserve its structure. This system has the added advantage of using low levels of energy and so fits with its eco-friendly policy.

Its manufacturing site in the Cosmetic Valley in France obtained the ISO 14 001 environmental certification in 2004 for the attention its pays to biodiversity, minimizing water consumption and waste management.
