Sustainable beauty packaging on the agenda at Luxe Pack 2010

Sustainability has been the buzz word in cosmetics for some time and beauty brands are increasingly looking to apply it to their packaging, searching for environmentally friendly packaging that does not compromise their glamorous image.

With environmental concerns gaining prominence globally, the demand for recyclable and safe packaging is increasing. The major trend for packaging companies worldwide is sustainability, and it is one of the key issues that will be addressed at this year’s LuxePack event in Monaco.

Sustainable boxboards targeting beauty care

European folding boxboard supplier M-real Consumer Packaging is one of the firms presenting its two main sustainable brands dedicated to beauty care.

Both Carta Elega and Carta Solida will be presented at the show as the company claims the two wood fibre cartonboards combine tradition with respect for the environment.

According to M-real, they are both sustainable and lightweight, offering cost effectiveness as well as good surface properties and strength unlike other boards.

Carta Elega is a fully coated folding boxboard and is recommended for fragrances, make up products and toiletries.

Carta Solida’s recommended use is also for make up products and fragrances as well as hygiene products, and is a fully coated BCTMP board.

M-real explain that by lightweighting boards, yields are increased and costs reduced throughout the packaging chain as well as promoting sustainability by consuming fewer resources, reducing transport volumes and producing less waste at the end of the packaging’s life.

Riikka Joukio, senior vice president of sustainability and corporate affairs of M-real, was keen to remind the industry using renewable resources, such as paper and wood, offers key benefits to the environment particularly if these raw materials are managed sustainably.

Cosmetics industry a leader in sustainable packaging

Cosmetics and personal care is one of the major markets using sustainable packaging with an excess of 600 new beauty products with green packaging credentials were launched in Europe in the last two years, according to a report from Companies and Markets.

Communicating packaging sustainability to the consumer is the topic of a seminar organised by CosmeticsDesign-Europe.com as part of the LuxePack educational programme.

During the session (Friday 22 at 3.15 pm) a panel of experts will investigate how brands can use the sustainable nature of their packaging to attract new consumers and improve sales, and the role packaging suppliers can play in this process.
