Artenius PET Packaging Europe (APPE) said it is the first leading PET producer to gain a Pan European BRC standard for packaging.

A spokesperson for APPE told FoodProductionDaily.com the BRC/IOP Global Standard for packaging and packaging materials helps to underline the company’s status, and provides further stimulus for continual improvement of APPE’s processes and products.

Billy Jansen as Group QSE & sustainability manager at APPE who led the project said, “Many European & North American retailers and global brand owners will only consider business with suppliers who have gained certification to the appropriate BRC Global Standard.”

The standard can be used across all of APPE’s European plants in the UK, France, Spain, Belgium, Germany and Turkey.

To achieve certification, all the company’s plants were independently audited and current systems and practices were assessed such as factory hygiene, quality as well as the technical aspects of packaging.

The company claims to be the largest European PET producer, manufacturing PET preforms, and also single and two stage containers.

APPE also has a recycling plant in Beaune, France.

The BRC standard

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) Global Standards, developed by retailers, are a leading global product safety and quality certification programme used by 14,000 certificated suppliers in over 100 countries.

The BRC/IOP Packaging and Packaging Materials Standard forms part of a suite of four industry-leading technical standards, including food safety.

“It was and still is regarded as the benchmark for best practice in the food industry,” said BRC.

BRC said the standard has now evolved into a global standard, used not just to assess retailer suppliers, but as a framework upon which many companies have based their supplier assessment programmes and manufacture of branded products.

In addition to use in the food industry, the standard can enable certification of the complete supply chain, such as consumer products and storage/distribution.
