Eight manufacturers have joined together to create an eco-designed box set of fragrances in order to illustrate the potential for more sustainable luxury design.

Emoi Infini was showcased at the recent Luxe Pack show in Monaco and follows Naya, a similar project launched at last year’s show to create an eco-designed face cream.

According to the manufacturers, the project is designed to completely integrate the eco-friendly approach so that it is no longer a constraint, but rather an integral part of the design.

Eco-designed from jus to cartonboard

The three fragrances for men, women and children, Elle, Moi and Lui, were designed by the fragrance and flavour group Mane using certified natural ingredients, and produced by contract manufacturer Strand Cosmetics Europe.

Primary packaging for the fragrances was provided by France-based glass bottle supplier SGD, with its Verre Infini product – a 100 per cent recycled glass with the aesthetic qualities expected by the fragrance and beauty industries.

Using the Verre Infini, which has been created from clear household glass waste, can reduce carbon emissions and energy use by up to 15 per cent, the company claims.

“The Infinite Glass is the only 100% recycled glass dedicated to perfumery and cosmetics on the market. Added to its impacting results over environment preservation, it can accompany any cosmetic or perfumery brand willing to build a sustainable development strategy,” a spokesperson for SGD told CosmeticsDesign-Europe.com.

The spray pump was supplied by Rexam and comprises of the XD11 screw pump with a Maxi-Mist insert suitable for both alcohol-based and water-based formulations.

Rexam’s marketing and communications manager Christine Gichuki explained that customers are increasingly asking for more ecological solutions.

“The screw pump is a way to answer this demand,” she told CosmeticsDesign-Europe.com.

A similar screw pump was used in the recently launched Thierry Mugler fragrance, Womanity, which was similarly designed with eco credentials in mind, she added.

Like the glass of the flacon, the PET plastic cap to protect the actuator is also 100 hundred percent recycled and was provided by VPI, manufacturers of injected and decorated plastic parts.

Cartonboard for the box set was provided by M-real Consumer Packaging, Wauters-B Pack undertook the printing and design agency Extrême Paris helped develop the concept and design.

“Carta Elega was chosen as the natural canvas for Emoi Infini [as it is a] sustainable and lightweight GC1 cartonboard, offering cost effectiveness together with excellent surface properties,” Chris Baudry from M-real Consumer Packaging told CosmeticsDesign-Europe.com.

Sensory approach

Emoi Infini was created to showcase what is possible in terms of sustainable design in the world of luxury and according to the manufacturers it moves away from commonplace environmental claims in favour of an ‘elegant sensory-orientated approach’.
