Dupont awards give only the smallest of nods to beauty packaging

The winners of the 28th Dupont Award for Packaging Innovation have been announced but this year there is only one winner from the cosmetics and personal care category.

Winners that included all fast moving consumer goods categories were announced recently across five categories.

Normally the cosmetics and personal care sector is well represented in the awards, but it seems that this year the judge’s decided that the innovation was happening in other areas.

PHD Skincare scoops prize for 'Never Miss a Spot'

This year the only prize for the industry was a Gold Winner Award, which went to Never Miss a Spot Technology, an extended wand sunscreen applicator that was showcased by PHD Skincare USA.

The packaging design garnered the award because it provides a uniform fine mist to aid in full coverage of the product, while the sprayer also has an easy-to-use lock that prevents inadvertent discharge during transport and storage. Consumers regularly express frustration over topical personal care product application, which is why the packaging developers worked towards this simple but effective solution.

The global awards are amongst the most prestigious in the packaging category, and recognize an overall winner – the Diamond Winner – a well as six Diamond finalists, together with a Leadership Innovation Award, five Gold Winners and nine Silver winners.

Winners from all over the world

The winners were from all over the world, with the USA, Brazil and various countries in both Europe - including Italy, Germany and Belgium - and Asia making up the nations to scoop the prizes.

The overall Diamond Winner was ThermaSet Blow Molded PET container for hot fill, which was provided for pasteurized food application offered by Graham Packaging of the USA.

The Leadership Innovation Award went to a 3D Digital Package Decoration Process, provided by MGI USA, an interesting technology that highlights the growing role that 3D printing is playing in packaging design and development.
