Cosmetics oil trend means that dropper bottles are back

One of the biggest niche trends in the cosmetics world in recent years has been the rise and rise of cosmetic oils, which goes hand-in-hand with traditional dropper.

Glass dropper bottles have been around for over 100 years, and probably reached a peak in the 1930s when they were the go to for a wide variety of cosmetics, from oils and fragrances to facial and eye treatments.

In recent years that popularity has slowly ebbed off, until cosmetic oils came back into fashion, and the vintage look of the dropper bottle was brought back to give the category added appeal as well as practical functionality.

The new generation of dropper bottles

Many of the dropper bottles designs have been given a renewed or refreshed and more contemporary look, and one of the most prominent manufacturers in Europe is Virospack, a family run company based in Barcelona, Spain.

Until recently the focus of its business has been the medical and pharmaceutical sectors, but now with the rising popularity of oils, this has become the fastest growing branch of the business.

One of the company’s recent dropper bottle projects was for The Hero Project’s latest cosmetic oil launch. The line is called Glow Drops and the design requirements called for a contemporary and sleek look that combined precise dosing.

Glow Drops aims for chic look

The Glow Drops label is targeted at the premium end of the market and is marketed as a dry touch facial oil made with over 98% natural essential oils plus a shot of lipid vitamin C, that instantly help smooth, nourish and brighten the skin.

In line with these product claims, the packaging has been designed around a moulded glass bottle with a 30ml capacity that is of high quality and a heavier weight, thanks to the thick bottom.

The design also incorporates a number of Virospack’s inhouse decoration techniques, including a customized silk screening effect in black and yellow.

Getting the decoration just right

Virospack said it has to work closely with the Hero Project team to ensure the geometry of the bottle and the precision of the screening effect, but the collaboration resulted in the client getting exactly what it wanted.

The design is topped off by a push button dropper in a 20/410 neck thread that completes the packaging design to give an impactful design that includes and contrasts the two different effects of the silvey shell for the cover and the dispenser button in yellow.

This dispenser results in accurate dosing of the cosmetic oil, with two to three drops on the hand resulting in  an optimal amount to cover the face neck and upper chest.
