Ciba launches new styling effect for plastics

Switzerland-based packaging provider Ciba has launched a new styling effect for cosmetics plastic packaging aimed at tapping into manufacturers' requirements to ensure their products stand out on over-crowded store shelves.

The new launch expands the company's existing Xymara range to include a further ten colours that now feature bronze, gold, copper effects, together with transparent, opaque, sparkling, shimmering or gloss.

Xymara is a range of special effects pigments designed to enhance the appeal and aesthetic qualities of a variety of plastic packaging, qualities that have become particularly important in body care and cosmetic packaging in recent years.

The reason for this is the fact that store shelves have been weighed down with competing products in recent years.

This increasingly means that befuddled consumers are simply opting for the packaging that 'screams the loudest', in an effort to solve confusion and avoid spending too much time choosing an appropriate product.

The newly extended Xymara range is expected to make its first appearance for personal care products in 2008 and 2009, and as well as the metallic effects will also include other shades such as chocolate brown, berry tones, iridescent blue green and aqua green.

"The new stylings are designed to enhance both objects and design," said Marc Dumont, global head of marketing, Ciba business line plastics.

"The effects can be varied from totally transparent to fully opaque. And they all sparkle with gold - some in two tones, some in tiny sparkles and others in glossy liquid flow."

More and more international cosmetics packaging providers are moving in similar directions in an effort to keep up with the demand for packaging that makes a statement.

Indeed, only this week US company Impressions Packaging also launched a shiny metallic effect for PET packaging designed to make products stand out better.

The company said that increasing market interest in brighter packaging, and in particular metalicized plastic packaging, led it to design and launch New Shiny Metallics, a line that aims to position products at the upper end of the mass market.

Impressions co-founder Rob Hyames said: "Everything looks the same when you go into a store. These bottles should stand out from the crowd and their look is very popular in today's cosmetic, personal care, spa and speciality applications packaging."

The Georgia-based firm can produce the new shiny metallic bottles in any of its heavy wall stock line of rounds and cylinders in 3.3, 4, 6.7 and 8 ounce capacities. It can also produce custom shapes to ensure that the packaging matches the finished product.
