Hair growth tonic for alopecia sufferers is launched at in-cosmetics
Japanese based company Fuji-Sangyo has developed a tonic said to treat and promote hair growth, whilst also preventing hair loss particularly in males inflicted with alopecia launched at in-cosmetics in Barcelona last week.

According to the company, the tonic comprised of the Fuji Banjiro leaf by a special extraction method has the potential to affect the hair follicle and dermal papilla cells due to its anti-androgen component.

Banjiro, also known as guava, is generally cultivated for food and folk medicine in tropical countries. The leaves contain polyphenol, which acts to reduce glucose absorption whilst featuring an anti-allergic effect.

This hair tonic is excellent in the proliferation promotive activity for human follicle cells, depilation preventiveness and trichogenous promotive ability”, says a company spokesperson.

Tried and tested

According to Fuji-Sangyo, anti-testosterone, proliferative and clinical tests were carried out to measure the effectiveness of the tonic on hair loss.

A topical application of 2mL was applied twice a day on thirteen males and three females with pattern alopecia within a four to ten month period whereby the results found 10 in 13 males hair growth improved by 76.9 percent.  The anti-androgen effect of the extract (50 percent ethanol eluted fraction) was 44.5 percent at 1 ug/mL.

Since the extract contained up to 90 percent ethanol eluted fraction, the 50 percent ethanol eluted fraction has the anti-androgen effect,” points out the spokesperson.

Therefore, “The proliferative effect of Fuji Banjiro Leaf Extract on hair follicle cells was confirmed,” they concluded.

Alopecia

Hair follicle cells are formed by differentiation of hair matrix cells at the upper dermal papilla, becoming hair and growing by division, growth and keratinization.

The growth of hair matrix cells and hair follicle cells decreases with the effects of the testosterone, stress and nutrition disorders. If growth decreases, the hair growth rate declines becoming thinner and resulting in the development and progression of alopecia.

In-cosmetics

This year’s in-cosmetics event, held at the Gran Via exhibition centre in Barcelona from the 17-19 April 2012, was said to be bigger than previous editions with over 530 exhibitors taking up 11,700 m2 of floor space.

The event played host to more than 50 new exhibitors from countries including China, Korea and Switzerland, as well as welcoming back companies such as Croda, DSM and Merck.
