The Cosmetics Compact is your compact source of the latest new headlines from the last few weeks, taking a glance at what has been happening in the cosmetics industry.

Whether in your lunch break, on your commute, or proudly displayed in your office, the compact is a great way to catch up on some of the highlights of the last few weeks.

In this edition we turn our attention to the topic of sustainability, which is always a good talking point and has seen lots written about it in the news in the last month.

We start with some news on sustainable design, after a team at Ohio State University designed a hairbrush that's easy to clean as the body of the brush flexes; prolonging the product’s life, and hopefully meaning les brushes find their ways to landfills.

Stepping away from design and into business approaches to sustainability, L’Oréal has announced its latest commitment to fighting climate change, stating its ambition to become a ‘carbon balanced’ company by 2020, and the initiatives it sets out to achieve this.

Whilst on the topic of carbon neutrality, we also spoke with Vicky Murray and Lou Green at Neal’s Yard Remedies on the subject, and they believe all companies can go carbon neutral or at least start to work out how they can do it.

Over to another exclusive, and Marie Marache from Groupe Rocher told us that the best way for the cosmetics industry to improve sustainability is to share their practices and metrics, and ensure they are considering the most relevant data.

And finally, the topic of ethical labelling has reared its head once again as research shows that the number of ethical labels on cosmetics packs is growing; however with no harmonisation and numbers increasing it could be at risk of creating confusion.

As usual, for any feedback, further discussion, or just a nice chat, please get in touch using the normal methods, or comment and share using Twitter  and Facebook.
