This year Organic Monitor's programme will be focusing on different approaches to reducing the impact of cosmetics and personal care products on the environment.

The summit will be held in Paris, October 24 – 26 and will comprise four sessions and two dedicated workshops all focused on the latest developments in sustainable cosmetics and personal care.

The use of green materials, the role of green and marine ingredients,  cosmetic ingredients from food waste, green exfoliants and development in anti-pollution ingredients will all be amongst the key topics.

The future of green materials

The sustainability of natural, plant-based materials is the first question to be asked of suppliers these days, as consumers want to know that the products they buy are from sustainable or renewable sources, and it is this conversation that will permeate much of the summit.

In line with this, the presentation will include Daniel Hoggarth from the Marine Stewardship Council, who will discuss the new sustainable seaweed standard, while Emmanuel Petiot, CEO of Deinove, will show how Deinocci baceteria can be a starting material for cosmetic ingredients.

Following on from this, Meryem Benohoud will discuss the possibilities provided by food waste. The role of bio-mimetics and sustainable processing methods to create novel ingredients will also be explored.

Green ingredients with lower impact

Other presentations will look at how it is possible to green up ingredients and still lower the impact of the formulation on the environment.

In line with this a number of presentations will look at how biotechnology is playing a significant role in developing nature-identical natural ingredients for cosmetic applications and solutions that use by products that would otherwise have been waste.

Presentations touching on this subject will include those by J. Rettenmaier & Soehne who will give details of its green exfoliants, whilst Ronald Britton will discuss the prospects for bio-based glitter.
