Firmenich enjoys place among top 1% for supplier sustainability
Firmenich has earned a Gold rating from EcoVadis, positioning the company among the top 1% of all suppliers assessed on their sustainability performance, as well as the leader in the Fragrance and Flavor industry.

The company says in a statement that since 2015, it has been engaged in a programme of increasing its environmental profile to meet ‘ambitious aims’.

It has, Firmenich states, a vision to become a carbon neutral company, seeking to do this via powering 100% of its manufacturing facilities from renewable energy sources or offsets, as well as by reducing its absolute CO2 emissions by 20%, decreasing water usage in water stressed areas by 24% and reaching zero landfill waste.

Due to its efforts so far, sustainability ratings company EcoVadis has awarded the company its gold level for this year. Firmenich, separately, has announced that it has been recognised by the Better Society Network with its 2017 Ethical Business Award.

The Better Society Network recognises business that lead on advancing social, environmental and ethical best-practices across businesses.

Details of the progress

Firmenich notes that its progress towards a stronger sustainability profile has been seen across various projects, working closely with key partners to tackle key societal challenges, such as access to sanitation, responsible nutrition and climate change.

For instance, Firmenich is committed to tackling today’s sanitation crisis by finding viable solutions for the 2.5 billion people lacking proper access to hygiene facilities today. In this context, Firmenich joined forces with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to address the Reinvent the Toilet Challenge, and developed breakthrough technologies that effectively counter mal-odor,” the firm explains.

Given today’s growing diet-related epidemics with 1.9 billion adults considered obese by the World Health Organization, Firmenich is committed to advancing responsible nutrition solutions. The Company has developed leading technologies that reduce sugar, salt and fat from the food and beverages consumers’ love, without compromising on taste, with more than 500 billion calories removed from food in 2016 based on sugar reduction.”

Gilbert Ghostine, CEO Firmenich, speaking on the gold rating from EcoVadis, said: “I truly believe that business must play a leading role in addressing some of the world’s most critical challenges, from tackling climate change to enhancing nutrition or sanitation conditions for all.”
