Oil-seed specialist Botaneco has received approval from European certification body Ecocert for the natural emulsion base Hydresia G2.

The Canada-based company launched the second generation oleosome product at In-Cosmetics in Amsterdam earlier this year.

Now the ingredient has been approved as a raw material complying with Ecocert’s standards for ecological and organic cosmetics

Validation through certification

“The Ecocert authorization validates our product and production process with the most internationally recognized symbol for natural and organic raw materials,” Andrew Baum, president and CEO of Botaneco's parent company, SemBioSys.

Botaneco released Hydresia G2 this year to allow formulators to develop products over a broader pH range than was possible with its original product.

The ingredient may be added to products in the pH range 3.5 - 8.5 making it available for use in low pH exfoliants and anti-aging products.

Botaneco is hoping to capture a larger slice of the personal care market with this addition to its oil-seed range, and Ecocert authorization will help it on its way.

Extraction process

Extracted from safflower seeds, Botaneco’s oil-in-water emulsions naturally contain moisturizing oils along with emulsifying proteins and phospholipids.

Botaneco claims that what is extracted is almost the finished product, which makes it natural, but also means that manufacturers can develop new products by cold-processing.

Formulation and processing time are reduced significantly with cold-processing, added the company.
