Personal care ingredients manufacturer Symrise has scooped two prizes at the DQS sustainability awards in Germany, recognising the company's continued focus on this area.

The awards acknowledge the accomplishments of companies all over Germany as they strive to maintain a high sustainability rating and reduce their carbon footprint in every aspect of the supply chain, from materials sourcing to manufacturing and logistics.

Symrise has made sustainability an increasingly important part of its business philosophy in recent years, as it strives to make its operations more efficient, while also reducing the company’s impact on the environment.

Awards for responsible sourcing and life cycle assessment

And this focus has reaped its rewards be picking up awards for excellence in Responsible Sourcing and Life Cycle Assessment categories.

The DQS award ceremony recognised a total of ten companies across 12 different categories for exemplary management and implemented business strategies that had a positive impact on the environment.

The four-person judging panel deemed Symrise’s Responsible Sourcing strategy to be outstanding because it recognized and upheld social responsibilities from both an ethical and environmental perspective throughout the supply chain.

Over the past year Symrise has been showcasing its project to source vanilla in Madagascar as the jewel in the crown of its sustainability initiatives.

The project has touched on the lives of 7,000 farmers in 90 villages across the country and the panel of judges noted that they were particularly impressed how the project was implemented to both invest in education and environmental measures, as well as improving in local infrastructure.

Likewise, the judges awarded the company the award in the Life Cycle Assessment category for its systematic approach in assessing the environmental impact of raw materials throughout their entire life cycle.

The company has an internal scoreboard system that to assess the environmentally relevant impacts of raw material and products and then uses the results to select the most environmentally friendly options.

Symrise’s sustainability aspirations

“These awards, along with the responses from our customers and other stakeholders, show that we are on the right path. We want to be a role model, both for other companies and our own employees, and inspire them to even higher levels of sustainability management,” said Dr. Helmut Frieden, Vice President Corporate Sustainability at Symrise.

That Symrise has taken its sustainability responsibilities seriously is reflected by the fact that it follows the G4 guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative (GPI).

In doing so, the company has minimised the size of its footprint throughout the entire value chain, maximised on innovation that adds social and environment value, creating a caring environment for its employees and local communities, while also focusing on sourcing raw materials through long-term partnerships that ensure transparency and sustainability.
