Silab’s new ingredient Affiness promises to reduce hard cellulite by cutting down the lipid droplets stored in the fat cells.

According to the France-based ingredients provider, Affiness – made from extracts of coriander and sweet orange fruit, can help eliminate the orange peel skin associated with cellulite and make the skin more toned and firmer.

The new ingredient has a double action on the lipid storage mechanisms, Silab claimed.

Affiness activates lipolysis (the breakdown of fats into their component fatty acids) according to Silab, favouring the elimination of fats stored in the adipose cells.

Reduce transport and storage

In addition to breaking down the fats stored in the cells, the ingredient has also been designed to reduce the transport and storage and lipids.

According to Silab, Affiness inhibits two membrane receptor proteins called FATP-4 (fatty acid transport protein-4) and caveolin-1.

FATP-4 is one of a family of six fatty acid transport proteins that are involved in the uptake of long chain and very long chain fatty acids into cells.

Silab’s in vitro tests suggest that Affiness, formulated at 0.5 per cent, can inhibit the synthesis of FATP-4 by 70 per cent as well as reducing the number of lipid droplets inside the cell by 97 per cent.

In addition, the same 0.5 per cent concentration of the ingredient reduced the synthesis of caveolin-1 by 38 per cent.

Furthermore, the company claims that in vivo tests saw 74 per cent of volunteers observing an improvement in the appearance of the skin.

The decrease in skin surface irregularities after application of a 3 per cent solution for four weeks was estimated to be approximately 10 per cent on the side of the thigh after pinching, and just under 7 per cent on the back of the thigh without pinching.
