Fighting against sagging skin is the latest aim of France-based ingredients supplier Sederma with Idealift.

The new ingredient has been designed to fight against the effects of gravity on older skin.

Elastin synthesis

Based on a lipodipeptide, Idealift helps stimulate the synthesis of elastin and other proteins related to its formation, according to Sederma.

This product acts on the skin fibroblasts and stimulates the synthesis of a number of proteins involved in the building of the elastic tissue like tropoelastin, fibrillin-1, fibulin-5 and lysyloxidase,” Sederma’s Olga Gracioso told CosmeticsDesign.

According to the company, in vitro tests showed an increase of more than 94 per cent in the settling of elastin/tropoelastin in the extracellular matrix after Idealift had been administered to the fibroblasts.

In addition, the company carried out in vivo tests on 26 female volunteers aged between 54 and 75 with sagging skin.

The women applied a cream containing 4 per cent Idealift twice daily for two months and according to the company effects were visible after one month. In addition, Gracioso claimed the active cream was tested against a placebo which did not show any effect.

Face and body

The ingredient can be incorporated into emulsions, gels and creams and is designed for ageing skin over 40 years old.

Although the most likely usage is in anti-ageing formulations designed for the face, Gracioso said the ingredient could also be used on the arms and stomach to improve skin firmness.
