An Ecocert-certified organic active ingredient for slimming body care products with a ‘fat burner’ effect, developed by Phytodia and distributed by IMPAG France, is to be showcased at in-cosmetics in Milan on 29-31 March 2011.

Corolea Bio combines olive leaf extract rich in oleanolic acid, and lady’s mantle, which is rich in corosolic acid. A natural extraction process associated with purification by bio-guide fractionation was used to obtain the plant extracts, a technology which IMPAG France says results in a high content of active materials and the conservation of their pharmacological properties.

The slimming activity of Corolea Bio is said to be based upon a new approach, with the ingredient claimed to boost the combustion of lipids stored in the adipocytes through activation of the mitochondrial function.

“By stimulating a specific receptor present at the surface of adipocytes, Corolea Bio stimulates the metabolism of mitochondria within the adipocytes,” a spokesperson from IMPAG France explained to CosmeticsDesign-Europe.com. “Mitochondria being the fuel site of the cells, they take the fats stored within the adipocytes to produce energy. So the more Corolea Bio stimulates mitochondria metabolism, the more the mitochondria ‘burn’ the fats stored.”

Clinical trials showed 71% reported measurable results

A clinical test was carried out between two volunteer groups for a period of 56 days, with one group applying a gel containing 2.5 per cent Corolea Bio, and the other applying a placebo gel.

Among the group which applied the gel containing Corolea Bio, the average decrease in thigh circumference recorded after 28 days was 0.3cm, increasing to 0.7cm after 56 days. According to IMPAG France, the maximum decrease recorded was 2.9cm, and over one third of the subjects reported a reduction in thigh circumference of more than 1.5cm.

After 28 days, 62 per cent of volunteers found Corolea Bio to have had a measured slimming effect, with this percentage rising to 71 per cent after 56 days. Under the same conditions, those in the placebo group did not report any slimming effect.

IMPAG France notes that consumer expectations regarding slimming body care products have evolved significantly over the years, with consumers increasingly looking for natural ingredients and visible effects from a product based on high-level scientific research.
