Germany-based ingredients supplier Evonik has launched two new skin care ingredients: Tego Cistus claimed to protect the skin against environmental stress and Tego Stemlastin said to reduce chronological ageing.

Produced in an eco-friendly way using a photo bio-reactor, Tego Stemlastin is a micro algae extract of a red algae (Cyanidium caldarium) that is able to survive in extreme environmental conditions.

Evonik highlights that the COSMOS-certified extract delivers a special intracellular composition of extremolytes such as algae polyphenols, mineral nutrients and amino acids.

Several in vitro studies were carried out on Tego Stemlastin, which Evonik says demonstrated the ingredient’s ability to protect and maintain epidermal stem cell capacity for rejuvenated skin activity. Additionally, it was shown to boost the elastic fiber network, reducing skin elasticity fatigue and leading to very supple skin, the company said.

In in vivo tests, Tego Stemlastin was found to significantly reduce fine lines by rejuvenation of skin cells and to significantly reduce the depth of wrinkles.

The ingredient has applications in anti-ageing products, rejuvenating face and body care products and in sun care according to Evonik.

Highly enriched in polyphenols from pink rock rose, Tego Cistus is a standardized plant extract suitable for use in skin protection, after sun, sensitive skin and daylight defense products according to Evonik.

The company notes that in vivo studies, the ingredient was shown to offer significant protection against UV induced inflammation, with the results being comparable to treatment with high levels of vitamin C and E derivatives.

Various in vitro tests were carried out on Tego Cistus, which according to Evonik demonstrated its ability to provide strong anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects, reduce reactive oxygen species (ROS) in skin cells and help protect the skin against external aggressions such as pollution and UV light.
