Dow Reichhold Specialty Latex is launching the first in a series of multi-functional polymers at Suppliers Day in New York this week.

Targeted towards formulators of cleansing products, PolySaf 5600 is distinguished from its competitors by its excellent film-forming ability, marketing manager Douglas Johnson told CosmeticsDesign.com.

Functional and sensual benefits of PolySaf 5600

The cationic emulsion chemistry behind PolySaf 5600 helps it form a good film on the hair or skin allowing cleansing ingredients to stay in place for longer.

Besides improving the capacity of washes and shampoos to clean, the ingredient also helps deodorants to remain effective for longer, said Johnson.

Attendees at Suppliers' Day are also being invited to test the sensual properties of the ingredient by using the sample formulations the company has prepared.

Johnson said the ingredient leaves a clean and light feel on the skin after application.

Compatibility widens potential usage

PolySaf 5600 is also being promoted for its flexibility and range of potential uses.

"In addition to the many functional benefits of the polymer itself, its compatibility and benign nature allow for a wide range of possible solutions," said Dr. Venkataram Krishnan, who led the team of scientists responsible for the development of PolySaf 5600.

With the launch of the ingredient, Dow Reichhold Specialty Latex, which is a joint venture between the Dow Chemical Company and Reichhold, is making its first move in the market for personal care ingredients.

More polymer launches planned

Other personal care ingredients are set for launch at the end of the year and the company plans to have a family of polymers to present to formulators at next year's Suppliers' Day.

All the ingredients are described as multi-functional and are designed to do what three or four other ingredients would have done in the past.

Johnson said the versatility of the ingredients will help manufacturers contain costs as high oil and commodity prices push up raw material costs.
